Paul McCartney is cool. Really. - Time Out Chicago
Last October, on John Lennon’s 70th birthday, people took the opportunity to ponder what he might be like today, what he might have done over the last three decades. In an interview with NME , Yoko, the most legitimate speculator, suggested her husband would’ve made “new music, using the computer.” Kyle Anderson of MTV perpetuated a myth that dates back to Beatles lunch boxes in 1964, that John was the smart one, Paul merely the cute one: “The latter day Lennon probably wouldn’t have ended up like Paul McCartney, making trifles of albums and trotting out old tunes.” Read More - Time Out Chicago

Busting Paul McCartney myths, adding some new ones as he tours U.S. - OregonLive.com
His flair was already apparent on the band's earliest hits; on "I Want to Hold Your Hand" (1964), the bass is on equal footing with the guitars, and it's like a song in itself on "Michelle" (1965). By the time of "Paperback Writer" (1966), McCartney is the lead instrumentalist, ushering in each verse like Britain's answer to Motown's James Jamerson. He's nearly in subterranean funk territory with the deep tones of "Baby, You're a Rich Man" (1967) and "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" (1968), and stomps like Godzilla through "Rain" (1966) and "Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me and My Monkey" (1968). Pitchfork: Various Artists: Rave On: A Tribute to Buddy Holly
Buddy Holly
was a singular musician who rose and fell in the era after rock'n'roll had become a distinct art form but before it had become art per se-- in the time, basically, between Elvis and the Beatles. His best songs are spare, nervy miniatures about puppy love riddled by anxiety-- an anxiety Holly made manifest in itchy percussive tracks and an inability to sing more than two lines without breaking into hiccups, the musical equivalent of sweaty palms. (This was in the late 1950s, when non-verbal ejaculations and jittery rhythms were the closest a pop singer could get to talking about sex, when sex was broken down into musical gestures and metaphors).
