LET IT BE DVD 'CANCELLED'
BEATLES legends SIR PAUL MCCARTNEY and RINGO STARR have reportedly blocked the re-release of the notorious LET IT BE film. The documentary, originally intended to show the Fab Four at work in the studio, instead illustrated the extreme tensions between the musicians as the band was on the verge of breaking up. It famously included scenes of MCCartney and George Harrison bickering over the latter's guitar-playing, and footage of an apparently disinterested John Lennon with his wife Yoko Ono. Although the film was shown in cinemas in the early 1970s, and released on VHS in the 1980s, it has been out of circulation for more than 20 years. And now the two surviving Beatles have allegedly blocked plans for a DVD release. A source tells U.K. newspaper the Daily Express, "There has been talk of Let It Be finally being released but now there has been a change of heart. The Beatles are still a massive global brand and it's felt it won't be helped if the public sees the darker side of the story. Neither Paul nor Ringo would feel comfortable publicising a film showing The Beatles getting on each other's nerves." SOURCE
John Lennon was correct
We live in a world where up is now down, and right is now left. In other words, life seems to be more of a copy of an episode of The Twilight Zone with Rod Serling providing the narrative in our life's news reports. It's easy to point out all of the seemingly wrong things in our lives. Gas prices way too high, electricity rates spiraling upwards out of control, individuals killing innocent victims without any cause or reason, a complete lack of leadership the world round just to name a few of the problems we face everyday. However, there always seems to be a way through the mists of life and an illumination that can be seen if you peer through the darkness ahead. Our maker, no matter who he or she is, was smart enough to realize that this "free will" thing would put people in jeopardy, but that's the beauty of it all. The power to correct the problems that are located throughout the globe is in the hands of all us and it is our duty to make a concerted effort to help with the push to happiness and not political correctness. Sure, it seems simplistic on the surface but it didn't take the inhabitants of the earth a couple of days to foul things up and it won't take a couple of days to fix it. [...more...]

A previously unreleased tape of music recorded by The Beatles has been found in a Liverpool attic. The tape, which has not been played since the 1960s, was found by a man who was cleaning out the loft of his elderly father's home. A reel-to-reel Philips tape, the recording is roughly 30 minutes long. It includes a number of unreleased versions of The Beatles' hits including 'I Feel Fine' and 'I'm A Loser' [...more...]

Almost 100 bands signed up for the Mathew Street festival
ALMOST 100 bands have signed up to play new themed stages at this year’s Mathew Street festival. The August bank holiday extravaganza will celebrate the best of Liverpool’s music scene and pay tribute to its musical heritage. The likes of cult double act Chas & Dave and 1990s chart-toppers Right Said Fred are among those already signed up. News of this year’s line-up comes 12 months after the outdoor festival was cancelled over concerns about safety. [...more...]
Beatles: Can't buy DVD
Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr have stopped the release of Beatles film 'Let It Be'. The 1970 documentary reveals tensions between the Fab Four - Paul, Ringo and the late John Lennon and George Harrison - shortly before their break-up, and insiders at the band's record company, Apple, claim the two surviving members do not want it re-released. A source said: "There has been talk of 'Let It Be' finally being released but now there has been a change of heart. The Beatles are still a massive global brand and it's felt it won't be helped if the public sees the darker side of the story. Unknown Beatles tape could go for £12,000
A UNIQUE recording made by The Beatles in the 1960s has been unearthed in the attic of a house in Liverpool. The recording of "Don’t Put Me Down Like This" was discovered by a man going through his father’s effects after his death. It was found on a 7-inch wide, reel-to- reel Philips tape along with a recording of an uncontrolled fit of giggling involving Paul McCartney and the late John Lennon. Auctioneer John King, of Cameo Auctioneers of Midgham, Berkshire, said the tape is expected to attract worldwide interest when it is sold next week. [...more...]

Cheech and Chong reconcile - and plan to visit San Jose
What are they smoking? That was our initial reaction on hearing a report of a Cheech and Chong reunion. The idea seemed as plausible as Paul and Ringo teaming up with holographic stand-ins for John and George on a tour-ific jaunt down memory lane with the former Beatles. But faster than you can fire up a comedy crowd’s imagination, Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong have indeed settled their differences. They will hit the road and perform in San Jose on Nov. 30. (More details to come.) The pair will discuss the reunion at the Troubadour in West Hollywood on Wednesday. [...more...]
Mills' Former Publicist Speaks Out About McCartney Video Evidence
Heather Mills' former publicist has taken aim at the charity queen in a bid to recoup the $100,000 she claims the ex-Mrs. Paul McCartney owes her for her services. Michele Elyzabeth resigned as Mills' media representative earlier this month following a series of rows with the former model. And now she's going public with her take on her former client, alleging the videotaped footage of an abusive McCartney she threatened to show to the court during the couple's high-profile divorce battle never existed. Elyzabeth dropped the bombshell during a recent taped interview with Access Hollywood, which aired on Monday. [...more...]
Beatles Memories 'Flooded Back' To Sir Paul McCartney During Shea Concert
Sir Paul McCartney says memories of The Beatles first US tour came flooding back to him during his recent appearance at the Shea Stadium in New York. McCartney was a surprise special guest during Billy Joel's concert at the Stadium on July 18th, performing the Beatles tracks 'I Saw Her Standing There' and 'Let It Be'. "Standing out there on stage and hearing the crowd, all the memories came flooding back of being there all that time ago with the band when we first toured the US," he said. [...more...]
Aspinall leaves $13.9M to family
Neil Aspinall, the late British financial wizard who ran the Beatles' business empire for decades, reportedly has left his family $13.9 million in his will. Aspinall, a married father of five, died of lung cancer in March at the age of 66. A childhood friend of Paul McCartney and George Harrison, Aspinall began his work with the Beatles by driving them to their gigs and shielding them from overly enthusiastic female fans. He later advised the iconic band on their business affairs as they rose to fame and eventually joined the management of Apple Corps, which ran the Beatles' music empire. [...more...]

My ticket to a fab Beatles fortune
A RARE piece of Beatles memorabilia is expected to fetch thousands of pounds when it goes up for auction. Concert review: Ringo was great, Winter and Squier really shined
If you didn't get the chance to see a living legend perform Friday night at the Reno Ballroom, let me let you in on a little secret: the biggest crowd response of the night was not for Liverpool native and former Beatle Ringo Starr. Sure, the star-struck audience stood up, cheered and sang along when Ringo pulled out classics like "It Don't Come Easy," "Photograph" and "All We Are Saying, Is Give Peace A Chance." In fact, "Peace," which closed out the show, provided the most poignant moment of the night. Things like that are the reasons most of the at capacity crowd showed up, and they were certainly not let down. But here's the thing: Starr's bandmate, Edgar Winter, absolutely and unequivocally rocked the house. [...more...]

RINGO STARR'S GRANDDAUGHTER FORMS A BAND

Happy Birthday, Mick Jagger!
What a drag it is getting old. Mick Jagger sang it, and now he’s living it. The rock ’n’ roll survivor turns 65 today, and even though he’s reached the retirement age of most mere mortals, the Rolling Stone has yet to stop giving his fans satisfaction. Despite an estimated wealth of $463 million, Jagger joins the ranks of other acclaimed geriatrics such as Neil Diamond and Paul McCartney who continue to release albums and tour the world. Like these icons, the knighted Sir Mick has remained mum for years about when he’ll officially retire from performing, according to the New York Daily News. [...more...]
1974 Band On The Run – Paul McCartney & Wings
Paul McCartney's fifth album since the breakup of The Beatles, it became Wings' most successful album and remains the most celebrated of McCartney's post-Beatles albums. It was 1974's top-selling album, and revitalised McCartney's critical standing. After the success of Red Rose Speedway and Live And Let Die – the new James Bond theme song – Wings began contemplating their next album. Paul and Linda McCartney, bored with recording in the UK, wanted to go to an exotic locale. [...more...]
Yoko Ono’s surprise letter to Northern Irish singer
A Belfast musician who is organising a ‘Festival of Peace and Love’ in the city next month last night spoke of his shock after receiving a message of support from John Lennon’s widow Yoko Ono. Paul Doherty, lead singer of the Vals and “Lennon’s biggest fan” couldn’t believe his eyes when peace campaigner Yoko contacted him to wish him luck for the one day even. A number of local artists and bands will be taking part in Valfest at McCory Park in west Belfast on Friday, August 8 and according to Paul, it is hoped the concert will allow “local talent of all musical genres and backgrounds to showcase their talent”. Sir Paul McCartney reveals the mistake that gave the Beatles a hit
After a lifetime in showbusiness, Sir Paul McCartney is one of the world's most respected musicians. So his audience on Friday was surprised to hear him say a mistake gave the Beatles one of their biggest success stories. Speaking to this year's graduates at his Liverpool Performing Arts Institute, the 66-year-old told the students how, when recording the Beatles' album Revolver in the 60s, a mistake led to a tape being played backwards. The sound led to the group creating the psychedelic effect which made the album one of the era's most defining records. [...more...]

The Beatles: Giggling fit tape found in loft
A never before heard tape of John Lennon and Paul McCartney having a fit of the giggles during a recording session has been discovered tucked away in a loft. The rare clip shows The Beatles in happier times joking with each other during a recording of melancholic ballad I'll Follow The Sun in 1964. The rare 30 minute reel-to-reel tape is being auctioned after being discovered in a loft, where it had sat unplayed for more than 40 years. Auctioneer Jon King said: "The vendor lives up north and was clearing up his father's loft when he discovered it. [...more...]
Free 'Let It Be'!
Guns N’ Roses’ “Chinese Democracy” has become the poster child for long-delayed projects, but some of us have been waiting even longer for something else: A decent home-video version of the Beatles’ “Let It Be.” Michael Lindsay-Hogg’s 1970 documentary, which shows the band squabbling before triumphantly performing atop their company’s London rooftop, hasn’t been in video circulation since low-quality VHS and Laserdisc versions were available in the mid 1980s. It has never been released on DVD. Every few years there’s talk of a “Let It Be” disc with bonus material culled from the hours and hours of rehearsals and recording sessions filmed by Lindsay-Hogg’s crew. Then…nothing. It should have come out upon the 2003 release of “Let It Be…Naked,” the Paul McCartney-approved, stripped-down version of the “Let It Be” album. Nope. [...more....]

Obama Channels Lennon
As I read, and then watched, Barack Obama's powerful and well-turned speech in Berlin, I couldn't help but wonder if the Senator and/or his speechwriter were consciously invoking John Lennon with the line (and title) "A World That Stands As One". My guess is not. But this verse from Imagine was the first thing that came to my head (and now won't leave): You may say that I'm a dreamer / But I'm not the only one / I hope someday you'll join us / And the world will be as one [...more...]
Sir George Martin's advice to musicians
If you don’t like the artist and they don’t like you there’s no future in the relationship at all. You have to have a personality that people warm to. This is one of the joys I’ve had working with my son – he has that, he has that rapport with people, cracking a joke, making people laugh. It’s what the Beatles had: a wonderful charisma. When you were with them you felt good. That is one of the reasons I signed them. I thought: “If they make me feel happy, they’ll make an audience feel happy.” [...more...]
In Defense of Hippies
First of all, the stereotype for hippies is about as reliable as the stereotype for any other people, that is to say not at all. Hippy culture was never monolithic. It encompassed well over half of every kind of kid there was in the late 60s and early 70s, and spanned every socio-economic strata of American society. If you weren't a hippy in those days, what you know and think about hippies is probably wrong. It's not your fault. The media has distorted the reality as a part of the conservative culture wars. They are, and have always been, threatened by hippies who never had any trouble seeing straight through them and who consistently called them on their bullshit. Progressivism (or enlightened thinking), started well before the age of the hippies, but for that one seminal decade, hippies were its natural home (though not exclusively of course). [...more...]
John Lennon sketches fetch £25,000
A signed exhibition catalogue by John Lennon containing risque sketches he drew of his wife Yoko Ono in the late 1960s has fetched £25,000 at auction. Lennon signed the catalogue for his exhibition entitled the Bag One for American journalist Sandra Shevey when she interviewed him and Ono in New York in 1972. Lennon's original drawings from the catalogue were seized by Scotland Yard officers when shown in London in January 1970 on the second day of their exhibition because of their erotic nature. They were a gift to his wife and celebrate their wedding, honeymoon and their plea for world peace in what became their notorious "bed-in" held in a bedroom of the Amsterdam Hilton. British antiques dealer and Beatles devotee Tony Barnes, who lives in Spain, bought the exhibition catalogue signed by both Lennon and Ono at Gorringes auction house in Lewes, East Sussex. The Beatles Blown To Smithereens
The Smithereens first paid homage to The Beatles when they recorded and released their own version of `Meet The Beatles`, the first Beatles album to be released in the USA. Now the band has gone back to the studio with a dozen Beatle B-sides for its next release. "The project started while we were making demos in preparation for the next new original Smithereens album. As the band warmed up on obscure Beatles B-sides they used to play in clubs, we soon realized there was some unfinished Beatles business for The Smithereens, especially in light of the success of `Meet The Smithereens,` and the idea for a follow up was born," says co-producer Kurt Reil. JOHN LENNON
Comprehensive biography of the Beatles' most outspoken and controversial member, whose murder by a demented fan in 1980 only added to his legacy. Norman wrote one of the first and still one of the best Beatles histories (Shout!, 1981), and though he claims to have corrected many "inaccuracies and misjudgments" from that earlier work, there just isn't much new to say about the group's historic, hysterical popularity or John Lennon's role in it. The author, who is also a veteran novelist (Everyone's Gone to the Moon, 1996, etc.), tries to compensate by giving an in-depth account of Lennon's early years, stressing the lifelong rage and fear of abandonment instilled by familial instability. He was raised by his Aunt Mimi after his father left, while his mother Julia lived nearby with her lover. Lennon was traumatized by Julia's death in 1958, when he was 17. [...more...]

BERNSTEIN WANTS TO CLOSE SHEA STADIUM... AGAIN
Former BEATLES promoter SID BERNSTEIN wants to hold one more performance at New York's doomed Shea Stadium, after he was snubbed for BILLY JOEL's final concerts there last week (beg14Jul08). Bernstein is credited with spawning the British Invasion in the 1960s by taking the Beatles and the Rolling Stones to America, and he organised the Fab Four's famous performance at Shea in 1965 - the stadium's first concert. Now aged 90, Bernstein is furious he wasn't invited to Billy Joel's two gigs at Shea last week (16Jul+18Jul08), the final concerts scheduled for the arena before it is demolished. And he wants to squeeze in an extra event at the baseball park, featuring a Beatles tribute act. Bernstein tells the New York Daily News, "Can I tell you how upset I am that I wasn't invited?" And he lets slip his plans, "I'm working with the group Rain, the Beatles tribute band, and I'm talking with the guys who brought the Pope to Yankee Stadium about a show. Maybe we'll have it at Shea." The stadium, home to the New York Mets, will be replaced by a new state of the art venue next year (09). SOURCE
Sir George Martin's On Record: The Soundtrack of Our Lives
There aren't many people in today's music world that you could call a living legend, but Sir George Martin is definitely one of them. If you're not familiar with the Grammy award winning and Oscar nominated Martin, he's the creative force that produced, co-produced, and arranged the music on all of The Beatles' original recordings, which includes every Beatles hit you've heard over the years. As well, Martin creatively helped to turn three James Bond themes into mainstream hits with his contributions and work on From Russia with Love, Goldfinger, and Live and Let Die. In addition to founding Associated Independent Recording (AIR), Martin has also worked with several of the music world's top artists and most recently remixed all of The Beatles songs used in the live show Love, which runs in Las Vegas. A Picture Of Devotion To Linda
If there is one overriding theme that comes over powerfully when talking to Mary McCartney it is how strong a bond of love and respect she had, and has, for her mother Linda. The late American photographer and businesswoman and her husband, the former Beatle, Paul, famously had one of the most enduring love affairs of modern times: she was the proverbial great woman standing, if not behind, then beside, a great man. But what is abundantly clear from speaking to the couple's daughter, Mary, 38, is that behind both was an uncommonly close and loyal family, a closeness that remains. Earlier this year, to mark a decade since Linda died of breast cancer, Mary and her father unveiled a retrospective in London of Linda's work, which the pair had been working on for three years. Right now, the whole family, including Mary's fashion designer sister Stella, are closely involved in revitalising the Linda McCartney vegetarian food range, something Mary describes as "a very personal project". Sir Paul McCartney to rock Israel 43 years after ban
Sir Paul McCartney is set to make pop history by playing his first gig in Israel, 43 years after the Beatles were banned from performing in the country. In 1965 McCartney, now 66, and his fellow Beatles were turned away by Israel’s then education minister, David Zarzevski, who thought that a show by the band might corrupt the minds of the nation’s youth. However earlier this year, Israel’s ambassador to Britan sent apology letters to McCartney and drummer Ringo Starr , as well as the relatives of deceased Beatles George Harrison and John Lennon inviting them to play as part of the country’s 60th birthday celebrations. Paul McCartney Wows 200,000 Fans In Quebec
Paul McCartney performed at a free concert as part of Quebec City's 400th anniversary celebration this weekend, to an estimated crowd of 200,000 fans. The outdoor show was held on the Plains of Abraham and McCartney addressed the crowd in their native French - although he did warn them that his knowledge of the language was limited. During the show, McCartney played a mixture of songs from the Wings, Beatles and his own solo back catalogue. SOURCE
LATE MCCARTNEY LANDS POLICE ESCORT
PAUL MCCARTNEY was given a high-speed police escort to his surprise appearance at a BILLY JOEL gig - because his flight was late. The Beatles legend arrived at New York's JFK airport on Friday (18Jul08) night, three hours after Joel's historic Shea Stadium show had begun. But city cops came to his rescue - by whisking him from the runway to the event in just 15 minutes. MCCartney wowed the crowd by duetting with Joel on Let It Be and I Saw Her Standing There. Joel's show on Friday (18Jul08) was the last ever rock concert at the venue, which is to be bulldozed at the end of the current baseball season. The Fab Four famously played there in 1965, at the height of Beatlemania. SOURCE

Thousands gather in Quebec for McCartney concert
Tens of thousands of fans gathered on Quebec City's historic site, the Plains of Abraham, in hopes of securing a good spot to watch Paul McCartney's free concert Sunday night as part of the city's 400th anniversary celebrations. Organizers expected some 200,000 people at the outdoor show by the ex-Beatle. Fan Leo Rodrigue sported a red Montreal Canadiens hockey jersey with the name "McCartney" emblazoned across the back above the number one. Carol Cleeland traveled from New Jersey with her sister, Elizabeth, for the concert. "We've been fans of the Beatles and Paul McCartney since the beginning," said Cleeland. "We love Paul McCartney's music and everything about him." [...more...]
AND OF COURSE HENRY THE HORSE DANCES THE WALTZ
As calmly as I could I asked if she knew who John Lennon was and how important he was to 1960s' popular culture. She said she knew he had long hair, took drugs and got shot. On one hand I was delighted that the greatest icon of my generation was part of the GCSE syllabus, but at the same time outraged that in my lifetime he should become the guy "with long hair who took drugs and got shot". I was even more upset to realise that I'm old enough for the reference points in my life to now be regarded as history lessons for my kids. [...more...]

McCartney Caps Joel's Incredible Night At Shea
Billy Joel bade a stirring farewell to Shea Stadium on Friday during an electrifying, sold-out final show at the same ballpark where the Beatles famously ushered in a new era in rock 'n' roll four decades ago. He was joined by an all-star lineup of friends including Paul McCartney, who told Joel, "Came here a long time ago. We had a blast that night and we're having another one tonight." "Good evening, Shea Stadium. Is this cool or what?" Joel told the crowd at the New York Mets' home field, which is to be razed after the baseball season to make way for a new stadium across the street. They're gonna be tearing this place down, but I wanna thank you ... for letting me do the best job in the world," he said. [...more...]

VETERAN ROCKERS TO RECEIVE ROYALTIES
Veteran rockers such as ROGER DALTREY and SIR PAUL MCCARTNEY are heading for victory in their ongoing campaign to extend the copyright on old recordings. The European Union (EU) proposed on Thursday (17Jul08) a scheme which will allow ageing musicians and session performers to keep receiving royalties for their music for 95 years. Stars currently lose the rights to their recordings after just 50 years. After that period, performers, producers and record labels are no longer compensated for sales or airplay. U2 and Sir Cliff Richard have also previously spoken out in support of extending the copyright term. Former Undertones singer Feargal Sharkey, now chief executive of British Music Rights, says, "I am especially pleased that the announcement focuses on the 'invisible' members of our industry - the musicians, engineers and session players whose names are hidden away in the liner notes and credits. "It is they, and not just 'featured' artists and record labels, who could derive real benefits from this move - and at a time in life when their earning power would be severely diminished." EU governments and the European Parliament still need to rule on the proposal. SOURCE
Pass the peace pipe and inhale: McCartney
Former Beatle Paul McCartney has a talent for sparking a furor when he lands on Canadian shores. In 2006, the singer-songwriter touched off a minor storm in Atlantic Canada with his vocal opposition to the seal hunt. McCartney's visit included trading barbs on CNN with Newfoundland Premier Danny Williams. And as McCartney prepares for a mammoth concert here Sunday, he's in the eye of a storm once again: prominent Quebec nationalists are in full froth over what they term a British cultural invasion. In an interview with Radio-Canada yesterday, McCartney played down complaints voiced by some ardent nationalists that his visit compounds the "Canadianization" of Quebec City's 400th anniversary celebrations. "I think it's time to, you know, smoke the pipe of peace and just put away the hatchets, because I think it's a show about friendship," McCartney said in a nod to his 1983 hit, "Pipes of Peace." 'Control' writer to make John Lennon biopic
The Lennon film will cover the story of late Beatle's childhood in Liverpool, where he was brought up by his aunt Mimi after his mother Julia died in an accident involving a police car, reports the Guardian. It will be based upon a controversial book, 'Imagine This: Growing Up With My Brother John Lennon['/b], by [b]Lennon's sister, also called Julia, in which she describes how Mimi was intensely jealous of her younger sister. Greenhalgh, who received an award for special achievement by the director of a debut feature for his work on 'Control', told the Guardian he could not resist the lure of a film about Lennon, despite intending to avoid making another music movie so soon after 'Control'. He said: "When looking for my next project I was wary of musical protagonists - but when John Lennon was floated, that vanished. [...more...]

Album Art Parodies: Part I (Elvis and the Beatles)
They say that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Well, in the world of album cover art flattery occurs more often than you would think. Oftentimes it’s manifested as parody. In other instances, the imitations are paying homage to the original artist. Execution runs the gamut from funny to downright pathetic. But I’ll let you be the judge. In our first installment of Album Art Parodies, here’s a round-up of album art by Elvis and the Beatles that inspired imitators, along with some random other examples thrown in for good measure. Ringo Starr and his Liverpool boyhood home
Ringo Starr, despite the title (and concept) his latest album, Liverpool 8, has a love/hate relationship with his boyhood hometown. At least it would seem from recent events: first, he appeared on BBC's talk show Friday Night with Jonathan Ross in January and made what some saw as disparaging comments towards his old hometown, even though he'd made several appearances at local celebrations recently. Then came (one supposes unrelated) news that the preservation group English Heritage had opted not to protest the demolition of the home he was born in, located at No 9 Madryn Street. Odd, considering that Pete Best's boyhood home had been marked for saving by that same organization. [...more...]
Highlights from the Grammy tribute to Beatles producer George Martin
Tom Jones told of sharing a drink with Paul McCartney in an English pub circa 1968 and asking, “When are you going to write me a song?” McCartney came back with a tune he offered Jones, but said it ought to be his next single. Because his record company already had another single in the pipeline for release, Jones wistfully noted, “I had to let this song slip. You win some and you lose some,” then jumped into the opening line: “The long and winding road …” Ironically, the arrangement would have been more fitting for a tribute to Phil Spector, filled as it was with the strings and horns echoing the 1970 version Spector produced for the “Let It Be” album. That version long irritated McCartney and was one impetus for the 2003 release of “Let It Be … Naked,” which stripped Spector’s production off those sessions. [...more...]

Sir George Martin has been honoured for his work in a glittering ceremony in Los Angeles. The Beatles producer received an award from The Grammy Foundation, which offers programmes for future music professionals and works in partnership with the Recording Academy. Beatles producer George Martin to host PBS 'On Record' documentary series
Martin will be the host for "On Record,'' an eight-hour series slated to air in fall 2010. Two-time Oscar winner Kevin Spacey will narrate the history of recorded music. Asked to name a favorite Beatles song, Martin selected "In My Life.'' "Well, we did like each other, for a start,'' Martin said of the Fab Four. "We worked as a team. Working with the Beatles obviously was a large part of my life, but not the entire part of my life. And they're not the dominant theme of this series. Music and records is the most dominant theme.'' 'Bigger than Jesus? The Beatles were a Christian band'
John Lennon famously claimed the Beatles were more popular than Jesus, even predicting that Christianity would "vanish and shrink". But 28 years after his death, in an interview being broadcast for the first time, he claims that on the contrary, he hoped to encourage people to focus on the Christian faith. Despite his familiar image as a hippy icon who invited us to imagine a world without religion, Lennon says he was "one of Christ's biggest fans" and felt emotional in church. [...more...]

George Martin goes 'On Record' with documentary
Nearly six decades after his start in the recording industry, legendary producer George Martin is at work on a documentary about the history of recorded music. Martin secured a place in that history not only as producer of almost all of the Beatles' recordings, but as a mentor to John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr. Beyond his formidable track record with the Fab Four, he also has worked with Gerry & the Pacemakers, Jeff Beck, America, Cheap Trick and other acts. [...more...]

The gym, not drugs, gives Ringo Starr a high these days!
English musician and former Beatles drummer Ringo Starr revealed that a trip to the gym is what inspires him now, rather than using recreational drugs. The star, who turned 68 on July 7 and who has just released his latest album Liverpool 8 earlier this year, found that exercising inspired his song writing better. He further stated that a trip to the gym was easier than staying up late smoking and thinking about songs. [...more...]
Loving John Lennon
It wasn't "lost" either, according to May Pang, former personal assistant, confidant and personal friend of the legendary musician and former Beatle. Pang, who lived with Lennon as his girlfriend between 1973 and 1975 and recently published a book of photos she took of the him during that time, was the honored guest at a book signing Thursday night at SR Riley's Musical Cafe. Although Lennon himself dubbed his time with Pang as "the lost weekend", the Beatle well-known for his dry wit was not referencing an actual weekend but the book and film, "The Lost Weekend". John Lennon's 'Peace' sells for $833,654
Christie's auction house has sold John Lennon's handwritten lyrics to Give Peace a Chance for 421,250 pounds (US$833,654). The lyrics were written during Lennon's 1969 Bed-in protest for peace at the Queens Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal. Christie's spokeswoman Zoe Schoon said Lennon gave the sheet to 16-year-old Gail Renard during the eight-day Bed-in. [...more...]

Orillia hosts biggest Beatles festival in Canada
The Orillia Festivals Committee today released program details for the second annual Orillia Beatles Celebration, to be held in Orillia from Sept. 19 to 21. The largest Beatles festival in Canada, this year's lineup features two former life partners of John Lennon and Ringo Starr. May Pang was the personal assistant to Lennon and Yoko Ono in New York. Following their separation in 1973, Pang became Lennon's loving partner over the highly productive 18-month period known as "Lennon's Lost Weekend." Pang will be featuring her new book on her life with Lennon, “Instamatic Karma,” and her Feng Shui collection of jewelry and apparel. [...more...]
Beatles drum skin, Lennon lyrics star at auction
The hand-painted drum skin that appeared on the sleeve of the Beatles' ground-breaking 1967 album "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" sold for $1.1 million at auction on Thursday, four times its estimate. Billed as the "world's most famous drum skin," it was the star lot of Christie's rock and pop memorabilia sale in London, and eclipsed the other highlight, John Lennon's handwritten lyrics for hit song "Give Peace a Chance." The manuscript still fetched $834,000, well above pre-sale expectations of around $500,000. [...more...]
Revealed: The secret Beatles tapes
LET me tell you about the magical mystery of the missing "Fab Four". Almost 30 years ago, Radio City commissioned the most incredible documentary series about The Beatles. It was made in America and featured never-before-heard interviews with the band, their friends and family. It went out once in 1982 and then was stored away for safe keeping. [...more...]
City celebrates first Beatles Day
Tribute bands are performing in the city, beginning with early performances for workers and culminating in a concert at Liverpool Arena. People in the city are being urged to wear "mop-top" wigs, with the profits to go to charity, including Alder Hey Imagine Appeal and Liverpool Unites. The date was chosen as the anniversary of the day the Beatles returned to Liverpool after conquering the US. [...more...]
My Secret Life: Mary McCartney, Photographer, age 38
The house/flat I grew up in... was quite busy and fun and always full of life. I have fond memories of a lot of noise and hectic goings-on. When I was a child I wanted to be... my grandmother was a maternity nurse and I had romantic notions of following in her path, until I had to have my tonsils out and realised how much hard work is involved. I have a tremendous respect for nurses but it's not my chosen path. The moment that changed me for ever... in my late teens and early twenties I didn't know what I wanted to do. Then I worked with my mum (the photographer Linda McCartney on her archives and contact sheets. This made me realised I wanted to do that as well. [...more...]
Celine Thinks She's Equal To Beatle Paul
Cat fight! Celine Dion's husband-manager Rene Angelil apparently got a little snitty when he found out Paul McCartney would have 250,000 people for his July 20 show on the Plains of Abraham in Quebec and Dion would only have 100,000 for her upcoming show near the same location Aug. 22, so the capacity for both shows has been adjusted to roughly 200,000 for each, reports the StarPhoenix. GREAT WHITE + WARRANT STARS FORM BEATLES TRIBUTE GROUP
GREAT WHITE stars JACK RUSSELL and MICHAEL LARDIE have teamed up with WARRANT star JANI LANE to form a new all-star BEATLES tribute group. The rockers - all huge fans of the Fab Four - are planning to record an album of Beatles covers and then tour. Russell says, "I think it'll be a lot of fun. The Beatles are definitely the reason I got into music.

Ballad of John and Yoko Hits All the Wrong Notes With Critics
"I think he would be jumping up and down," said Ono, 72, "I think he would have loved it." But with virtual unanimity the critics disagreed. The New York Daily News described Lennon as "so goofy that someone arriving late might imagine he had stumbled into [Monty Python's] Spamalot next door. The New York Times bemoaned its "fortune-cookie wisdom" which produced a "drippy version of [Lennon's] life, written and directed with equal clunkiness." Variety said the score sounded "unfinished in a sad and rather ghoulish way". The discrepancy in views is hardly surprising given one critic's belief that a key flaw in the production is that it is "Ono-centric". Passing quickly over Lennon's career in the Beatles, it gives little time to his first marriage, or to the son he fathered before he met the Japanese artist. It also omits his affair that forced the couple apart for more than a year. Meanwhile, phrases such as "We're all one", "Love is the answer", and "Be real" are repeatedly projected on to the stage. Brian Wilson proud of Beach past
In the 1960s, the British Invasion landed and millions of baby boomers were turned on to the Beatles. Who do you think the Beatles were listening to? Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys. None other than Paul McCartney, no slouch as a songwriter himself, called the Beach Boys groundbreaking 1965 record Pet Sounds the inspiration for the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. "Pet Sounds blew me out of the water," he's quoted as saying on Wilson's website www.brianwilson.com. "I played it to John so much that it would be difficult for him to escape the influence ... it was the record of the time. That was probably the big influence that set me thinking when we recorded Pepper ..." [...more...]

Billy Joel Pulls the Curtain at Shea
He remembered watching the Beatles and realizing that they were "just like me and my friends, a bunch of wiseguys, street kids." The arrival of the Beatles, he thought, "made it all possible. It made it all conceivable. 'That is what I want to do.'" Inspired by the four working-class boys from Liverpool, Mr. Joel and his starstruck pals retooled themselves as a Beatles cover band, specializing in the hits of the British invasion. More than 40 years later, Mr. Joel has been dealt a singular honor: He will be the final musical performer on the baseball field at Shea Stadium, where he will play two concerts, on July 16 and 18. Never intended by its architects as a concert venue, Shea, which will give way to the new Citi Field for the 2009 baseball season, has nevertheless stamped its name on the history of music in America, having hosted not only the Beatles, but Led Zeppelin, the Clash, the Who, Bruce Springsteen, and others. Some even call it the "most hallowed venue in rock history." [...more...]
LENNON'S SON BLASTS CRAZY FANS
JOHN LENNON's son JULIAN has launched a scathing attack on the crazy BEATLES fans who stalk him over he internet. Julian - the eldest son of the late legendary musician - is upset after his social networking page attracted a legion of "fruitcake" fans. He says, "I've just had enough of all the bull I have come across and had to deal with. "There's a few out there who just take the fruitcake. Nasty, nasty, miserable, self-absorbed people. I wish the fruitcakes out there would just grow up and get a life." [SOURCE]
The truth (from Jules blog): Why do you continue to always take things out of context!?! When referring to Fruitcakes in an earlier Blog, I was purely referring to a few people that had continued to expect a closer relationship via MySpace, than was possible & didn't understand where the boundaries lay & they had been warned to be respectful of the site & the other honest fans out there, but some chose not to & therefore were deleted. The Blog did not in ANY WAY refer to BEATLES FANS, which some Pap Media claim is the case. So as usual, the press got it wrong, & that is why I never speak to them, because they've lied & screwed me over so many times for no good reason, except to stir things up & cause trouble. Never mind the Fruitcakes, If anyone should get a life, it should be the people that write this kind of crap! Because you can't consider what they do as Journalism, especially compared to the real honest, hard working journalists in the world, whom have a life & whom try to print, guess what, THE TRUTH!

Starr Unfazed By Childhood House Demolition
Former BEATLE RINGO STARR is unfazed by the proposed demolition of his childhood home in Liverpool, England. The rocker's former house in the city's Madryn Street is all set to be knocked down after officials at English Heritage decided against listing the building as a national treasure. English Heritage executives argue the home has no real links to the Beatles, because Starr moved out of the property when he was a child. But Starr insists he really isn't bothered about the campaign to save the property. [...more...]
McCartney to Boycott China Over Animal Cruelty
Sir Paul McCartney says he will never perform in China after watching a secretly taped film of animals being abused and killed for their fur. In one scene, shot in a fur market in Guangzhou, southern China, and due to be broadcast on the BBC's Six O'Clock News last night, workers throw cats into boiling water. The film was watched by Sir Paul and his wife, Heather, at a preview screening. Sir Paul said yesterday: "I wouldn't dream of going over there to play, in the same way I wouldn't go to a country that supported apartheid. This is just disgusting. It's against every rule of humanity."

Louise Harrison nurtures Fab Four's legend
Louise Harrison had a dream. She dreamed her younger brother, George, had not died of cancer. He was healthy and happy to see her. Louise told George to move to Branson, buy a big house and sit in with a Beatles tribute band, the Liverpool Legends. When Louise's dream ended, she woke up and "just cried my eyes out," she said recently. Louise has spent the past few years in Branson, working with the Liverpool Legends and trying to keep the Beatle's legend alive. (The band has roots in Chicago, but it landed in the southwest Missouri Ozarks three years ago.) [...more...]
Ringo Starr shines at Wildhorse
The rows of dining tables lining the Wildhorse Saloon’s floor were a bit of a discouraging sight Sunday night, before Ringo Starr and his All-Starr band took the Nashville club’s stage. In his years with the Beatles, Starr’s audience would be leaping out of their seats to get a better view and have their screams heard. Now, with Starr’s current tour hitting numerous casinos and resorts, was his audience really going to simply sit with their dinner while a Beatle — one of two the world has left — sang Beatles songs? HAPPY BIRTHDAY RINGO!!
Former Beatle wants people to ask for peace and love today at noon. Ringo Starr only has one wish for his birthday: peace and love. The former Beatle, who celebrated his birthday today, announced on a recent interview for Access Hollywood that all he wants for his birthday is peace and love. Now his wish is being extended. As the opening post on his official website says, Starr wants everyone in the world at noon to make a peace sign with their hands and say “Peace and Love.”
“Wherever you are in the world, join him in making the peace sign and saying, singing, shouting, whispering, signing, writing or quietly thinking one simply beautiful and universal message: "Peace & Love," says the website. Crowds are expected to gather on Abbey Road in England, Capitol Records in Los Angeles and Strawberry Fields in New York to fulfill Starr’s wish. SOURCE

Neil Young Covers Bob Dylan And The Beatles
Neil Young proved that he’s still got it last night in Denmark, as he headlined the main stage at Roskilde Festival. Tens of thousands of festival punters gathered to hear the aging rock legend perform a set that included classic tracks such as ‘The Needle and the Damage Done’ and ‘Cinnamon Girl’. There was also a surprise rendition of Bob Dylan’s ‘All Along The Watchtower’. Young closed the set with a cover of The Beatles ‘A Day In The Life’, paying homage to other musicians of his generation. [...more...]
Ringo’s birthplace faces demolition
The childhood home of Beatle Ringo Starr is set to be demolished after English Heritage rejected calls to preserve it. The famous drummer was born in the modest terrace home at No 9 Madryn St, Liverpool, and lived there for the first four years of his life before he and his mother moved. Many locals have urged English Heritage to step in and stop plans for the house to be demolished. The former childhood homes of fellow Beatles Sir Paul McCartney and John Lennon are now owned by the National Trust and visited by thousands of fans every year. [...more...]

Cheeky Girls "flattered" by McCartney
The Cheeky Girls have admitted that they are "flattered" that Sir Paul McCartney knows who they are. It was reported earlier this month that the former Beatle was friends with the pop duo and shared the same gym as them. Monica and Gabriela Irimia confirmed the rumours, claiming that they were shocked when the veteran musician recognised them. "We were so flattered that he actually knew and he said 'hi'," Gabriela told DS. "We had a small chat every time about life, our health, the gym and things like that." Monica commented: "Can you imagine us two on the treadmill with him chatting? It was really cool, I mean that sort of thing only happens once in a lifetime. [...more...]

After 43 Years, Israel Welcomes Paul McCartney
Paul McCartney is no longer a threat to Israeli youth. More than four decades after the Beatle and his famous band mates were told they couldn’t perform in Israel for fear that they would corrupt the country’s young people, the “Let It Be” singer has signed on for a September concert in either Tel Aviv or Ramat Gan. The big-budget show, first reported by Yediot Aharonot, will follow McCartney concerts in Georgia and Turkey. The show, likely to be the largest and most expensive of the summer, is being organized by David Zarzevski, a promoter behind the Eilat Jazz Festival and recent Tel Aviv-area concerts by Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu. We didn't start the fire
This song was said to be written after a conversation Billy Joel had with Sean Lennon (John Lennon's son), who complained he was growing up in troubled times. Well, that much can be said by anybody. Everyone can say that they grew/are growing up in troubled times. But if everyone were, as Billy Joel did, to list out all the good AND bad, then I think that they would balance out nicely. We need to look at the big picture. History is happening all around us. Every day something is happening that will be remembered by someone. We didn't start the fire, but each and every one of us are burning embers. [...more...]
'All You Need Is Love' finally arrives in U.S.
British documentary maker Tony Palmer called his 17-hour TV series exploring the origins of American popular music “All You Need Is Love,” because John Lennon told him it would make a great title. But in the three decades since he made it, it's become evident to Palmer that he could justifiably have named it "Nick of Time." The series will be shown in its entirety for the first time in the U.S. this weekend, marathon style, at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood as part of the Mods & Rockers Film Festival. It's broken down into chapters on various facets of popular music, such as jazz, blues, swing, Tin Pan Alley, country, the Beatles and music that was fresh when Palmer was filming it in 1975 and 1976, glitter and progressive rock. MCCARTNEY IN PARALYMPICS CAMPAIGN
SIR PAUL MCCARTNEY will appear in a British TV campaign for Paralympic athletes, urging the public to donate to the cause. The former Beatle has joined forces with fundraising appeal Paralympics GB, which aims to send disabled athletes to the Paralympic Games in Beijing this year (08). And he will make a direct plea in a televised clip set to air on 7 July (08), asking for British viewers' support in reaching the charity's goal of $4 million (GBP2 million). MCCartney says, "I met Paralympic dressage rider Sophie Christiansen and was blown away by her skill, dedication and the fact she had won a gold medal for Britain, so I felt I had to do something. "My suggestion was simple. Why not create an ad to highlight the work of ParalympicsGB and ask the public to give much-needed money." MCCartney's advert will premiere next week (07Jul08). He was divorced from former model Heather Mills, who lost a leg in a motorcycle accident, earlier this year (08). [SOURCE]

Sir Paul McCartney takes eco-friendly car for a spin
The former Beatle's £84,000 Lexus hybrid vehicle was jetted 7,000 miles to the UK. The LS600H was a gift from Lexus to the 65-year-old, who helped promote the hybrid vehicle. But instead of arriving by boat as expected, the car was flown to Britain on a Korean Air flight, creating a carbon footprint almost 100 times bigger than if it had come by sea. Sir Paul was photographed in the maroon saloon for the first time as he was driven to his London recording studio yesterday. The musician is a vocal advocate of vegetarianism and has long been a poster child for environmental activism. [...more...]

MCCARTNEY TO PERFORM AT QUEBEC'S BIRTHDAY
SIR PAUL MCCARTNEY will help Quebec City celebrate its 400th birthday this summer (08) with a "big, big" concert. The former Beatle will take to the stage on the Plains of Abraham on 20 July (08), the first time he has performed in the city. He reveals to Musimax TV presenter Mike Gauthier, "I am doing a gig, a big gig, in Quebec City on July 20 to help Quebec celebrate their 400th anniversary. That (400 years) is a long time. "We're coming to Quebec for the first time. We're going to have a great time and I would love to see you there." Celine Dion is also performing eight sold-out shows in the city in August - 400 years after it was founded by French settler Samuel de Champlain. [SOURCE]
MCCARTNEY'S HEY JUDE ROW
SIR PAUL MCCARTNEY almost scrapped THE BEATLE's hit HEY JUDE - because he and GEORGE HARRISON couldn't agree on the track's arrangement. The legendary musician remembers how recording for the beloved anthem was thrown into chaos when he clashed with late bandmate Harrison over whose version of the song was better. He says, "What started happening, I think, was that I'd started getting on George's nerves. One prime example was when we were doing Hey Jude. "George started answering my vocals on his guitar. He was filling in all the gaps. Now, what do you say? 'Er, look, man, do you mind?' You've got to put it diplomatically. But you've got to say, 'I don't want that in the arrangement'. And certainly in that case, he took umbrage." [SOURCE]
Paul McCartney Opens Up About Final Moments with George Harrison
I Want to Hold Your Hand. And they did. So says Paul McCartney, speaking for the first time of his final moments with fellow Beatle George Harrison, who was succumbing to cancer. "We held hands," McCartney, 66, tells Britain's Uncut magazine. "It's funny, even at the height of our friendship, as guys, you'd never hold hands. I sat with him for a few hours when he was in treatment about 10 days from his death," McCartney says of Harrison, who died in 2001, at the age of 58. "We joked about things – just amusing, nutty stuff. It was good. It was like we were dreaming." McCartney, who first met Harrison on a bus while the two were schoolboys in Liverpool, said the guitarist was more than a friend – he was family. He was my little baby brother, almost, because I'd known him that long." [...more...]
